Old Calcutta
Calcutta was the Indian capitol under the control of the British Raj from 1858 to 1911. The city has been renamed back to its original name of Kolkata. This is the capitol city of the Indian state of West Bengal located in eastern India along the banks of the river Hooghly. The cities population, including the suburban area, exceed fifteen million residence making it the third largest city in India and the eighth largest city in the world according to the United Nations. This city once the center of modern education, industry, science, culture and politics in India. The city has enjoyed growth in business and industry in recent times giving rise to beautiful five star Kolkata hotels. This city is low lying with an elevation just above sea level at 17 feet, the temperatures range from winter temps of 12 to 27 degrees Celsius and summer temps of 24 to 38 degrees Celsius. The metropolitan area is in excess of one thousand three hundred eighty square kilometers. There is much in this city galleries, eateries, museums, beaches, night life, shopping and more. Kolkata continues to evolve and grow in the ever changing Indian world as this country pushes itself forward into the twenty first century. Modernization continues in India in general and Kolkata specifically. High tech, to medical and science. Bird watching is fun pastime in the rural areas near Kolkata, India is home of more than one thousand two hundred forty species of birds. These species live every where from the high Himalayan to the mangrove forests of the Sundarbans delta. There are eight hundred eight specie of birds native to the region of West Bengal. The unique geography of this area give rise to the great variety as it encompasses Himalayan peaks to the sea level areas near the coast.
